PAPI Positioning and Harmonisation

ATS have been engaged by a major Middle Eastern airport to determine the PAPI positioning for a new parallel runway development.
Following issues with the PAPI positioning on their existing runway, a major Middle Eastern airport engaged ATS (through a local partner) to determine the best positioning for the PAPIs on the new parallel runway to provide the best possible harmonisation between the ILS Glide Path and the PAPI signals to suit the expected fleet mix. ATS determined the PAPI location to best suit the nominated target aircraft. Due to the slope of the runway, standard PAPI positioning was required to be adjusted to ensure that the PAPI signals were in alignment with the glide path to ensure safe aircraft operations. ATS also determined the Obstacle Protection Surfaces for the PAPI’s as well as the required beam heights of the PAPI units.
